Important Things! Please Read

As the world continues to change on a frantic basis, we all are making huge adjustments to our lives and daily routines.

BMR is unique in many ways, including the fact that a HUGE percentage of participants are active behind the scenes doing all the many things that make this event possible. From creating themes, sponsoring bonuses, scoring, ..and the list goes on..and it truly is a co-op of giving and participating. After 9 years, still a grass-root endeavor with riders who also create our vast infrastructure.

Here at BMR HQ, we're fortunate to have access to healthcare professionals via participants in the rally, family members and friends. Yours truly has heard more china virus stories than you could imagine. A close friend who lives here in Reno is consulting major hospitals across the nation and it is amazing to hear what is taking place ...as hospitals across our great country put amazing efforts and operational procedures in place. RenoKathy is working feverishly in her important role at northern Nevada's primary hospital and the only trauma center for many many miles. She has kept her smile and NY spunk, but the pressure is strong.

Nationally and regionally our governments are making decisions that affect all of us, and the results vary in all ways -including geographically. Here in Reno most everything is shut down, but knowing exercise and mental health are important, golf courses remain open. Hiking/biking trails are open.
Few argue that the mental health issues and the economic impact will be cause a greater human toll than the virus causes.

I was reminded to walk through the cancer wing of our local pediatric hospital if I want to put this virus in perspective. We've become so focused on the virus and securing toilet paper than we're often losing sight of many precious people in need. Let's all try to make sure we're taking care of our families and the most vulnerable in our community. Isolation can be worse than the cause.

I've spent hours on the phone talking with many of the core people in this rally the last couple of days. Everyone is making prudent decisions based on their own environment. Everyone is different, what makes sense here in Reno, doesn't make sense in Manhattan NY (Manhattan NV has yet to be affected by the virus but a safe bet they get the virus before they get running water).

We must all take personal responsibility and lead by the choices we make for ourselves, our families and our communities. For many this means not riding, and there is no shame in that.

And we are making some changes to the rally.

* RJ328 is on hold! We know many were looking forward to seeing Liz and her bike, but recent changes in WA state have helped us decide that the timing is not prudent. Liz gives virtual hugs to all who had planned to attend and we all look forward to this being re-scheduled.
* We're putting a hold on all RJ Theme bonuses. They are an anomaly in what we do because even though they typically only draw half dozen people, they do bring people together within a one hour window. We look forward to putting these back on the calendar, but are making no assumptions as to when that might happen.
* While we have new themes ready to go, we're putting those on hold as well. As recently as yesterday I had planned to release them for scouting purposes, but as of today these are on hold.

The napkin math on our event .., with hundreds of thousands of bonus scored over many months, and million-plus miles over 9 years is amazing. Our safety record is amazing, and it's primarily due to riders making smart decisions.
Currently smart decisions are more important than ever, primarily because they can affect others. So continue to be smart - in fact, double down on your record of making good decisions, it's not all about yourself.

BMR Streaming Biker Flicks.

With the current state of planet earth, with most lives being disrupted in one fashion or another ...many of us can use some mental health relief and/or fill time that would normally on the bike. ....so
**BMR will stream a new biker flick every day(ish) for your viewing pleasure. Feel free to share with your biking buddies, we've got the infrastructure to support this. Don't be shy to suggest titles you'd like to see.

Currently Up: Electra Glide In Blue

Elctra Glide
Thanks to Jack Weston's suggestion, Electra Glide In Blue

Lead? or follow?

Leading via each of our individual decisions is important. And, while many of us are not good at following, it is wise to weigh all things that are affecting our environments and communities when we each make our decisions.

Here is a funny story from the Austin household.

RenoGrace is home for Spring break, -and she's not happy that her parents squashed the fancy vacation plans...

RenoGrace has taken a liking to cooking ...simple things like pancakes, waffles, pasta sauce etc.

I witnessed her making waffles this morning and I said:
"Grace, I see you're using a recipe. Did you ever think that recipes are for followers, but creating a recipe is what leaders do. Are you a leader or a follower?"

Well, I'll close with saying our waffles were not very tasty this morning, and I never imagined what types of things could be put into waffle mix.

Leading our way out of our current challenges may not always taste good, but leading is important ....as we all lead via the decisions we make as individuals. Be smart with your decisions they'll have a bigger impact than stomaching a bad tasting waffle..

Be Mindful

  • We'll say it again. Make prudent decisions that are best for you, your family and your community. This varies for all of us based on many factors. We trust and back whatever you do. Your track record of safe decision making has earned you this freedom.

  • Dog deserves a break?. Reportedly dogs are getting 240% longer walks than typical, listen to your pet.

  • Don't be shy to post up PP submissions of nice things. We all are happy when we have the opportunity to smile. When you see an act of kindness, a beautiful sunset, a good looking motorcycle ..or something funny: Take a picture and share the smile with us. Please don't forward others pictures or memes, make it original from the lens of your phone.

Above, Tim social distancing in Lebanon. Nice riding Tim and great attitude. Congratulations on week 12 3DR title!
Following is a reply I received from Tim regarding his ride. I hope he doesn't mind that I'm sharing it!
Thank you John!
It was just a typical ride this weekend. Get 3 or 4 hours behind schedule the first day. Make the wrong choices when adjusting the plan to get back on schedule, throwing away dozens of potential points in the process. So many little failures but the best one was the failure to wipe the giant grin off my face on the way home.

John, I want to mention how appreciative I am of the work of all the scorers. Like many, I generally try to wait at most picture match bonuses till I at least see my submission on the site. If I'm really confident that it's good I might take off for the next one but, generally, I like to wait until I see the scoring decision. Often I'll take a couple of back up pics while I'm waiting just in case. The scoring was happening so fast this weekend I never really had to mess around with that. So a huge "Thank You!" to the entire team.

For those planning to see Liz and her bike this weekend at RJ328, you'll have make do with this photo ...or maybe Liz will post one up for us this weekend. As noted earlier, RJ328 and all RJ bonuses are on hold.

BMR 2020 Banquet

BMR 2020 Banquet will be in Minden Nevada. We feel fortunate that we're able to return to our roots -and the location of the first three BMR banquets (2012, 2013, 2014). We had other locations on the short list, including Grand Junction CO, but the stars lined up for us to return to Minden.

We opened soft registration for testing a week ago, and already we have riders from the east coast and other locations registered. We're excited to be returning to Minden and the Carson Valley Inn, it's a great location and very popular in past years. You want to make this banquet if at all possible. And don't delay, as our block of rooms will most certainly get filled and it's first come first serve. Any questions, reach out to RenoJohn.

AMA Hall Of Fame, ..just one of the many accomplishments on the resume of our guest speaker at BMR 2020 banquet.

Missouri Rally

June 5 @ 5:00 am - June 6 @ 6:00 pm
The NIITWIT group is launching yet another rally for your enjoyment. The Missouri Rally will begin and end in, you guessed it, Missouri! Centrally located approximately a one day ride from either Salt Lake City or the Atlantic seaboard, this 37 hour rally offers the great plains, Ozark mountains, national forests, slabs and backroads. The inaugural theme will be Insurrection and will feature civil war sites with a playing field ranging from Minnesota to Mississippi and Colorado to Pennsylvania. The Missouri Rally is intended to be a fun rally for the first time rally rider (we’re trying to be a gateway drug), as well as a tough routing exercise that will challenge veteran riders.
The rally dates are June 5-6, 2020. Registration is open soon on Ride Master. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please email Bob Bowman at missourirally@gmail.com.

**YES BMR veteran and good guy #002 MOBOB BOWMAN is putting on a great rally this summer and it promises to be a grand time. If you live between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean and you're not signed up for this you are retarded. Please add this to your summer riding schedule, don't be on the sidelines.

Activity Report is a good place to see action between any time window you want. Buttons in place for some obvious ones, but you can set any window you want in the URL.

Another Year of Great Folks! See some of your peers!

There will be much more to report in the coming days, as the first three day rally takes shape, and we take inventory of how riders are attacking the various themes. Topic for next newsletter will include: In BMR Bonus Submission, when do you want your motorcycle between you and the bonus. The answer is rarely, and we'll talk about why this is.

Please note that all past and present newsletters are available on the BMR website under the Groovy Tab

Do you see the light?

Focus on the rider. That is what we're doing this year as we create bonus themes and invest in the BMR infrastructure. We always try to improve what we have in place and slowly roll in new functionality. There are a lot of moving pieces to this event ...as we continually work to create a great event for riding enthusiasts -and this year we're particularly excited about the rally.

What you can expect in BMR2020:

  • HUGE bonus listing which will have thousands of destination bonuses. Likely the largest bonus listing in BMR history and considerably more than last year. The themes this year are inspiring, straight forward and fun.
  • Additionally, the "Gas & Tires" Theme is returning, and again it will compliment the weekly 3-day rallies that have become a popular part of BMR.
  • And of course the meat and potato staples that we all expect from BMR will be on the table as well.
  • 3,443 hours in length. Wow!, one of the longest BMRs ever! Start date = January 01; 2020
  • Camaraderie. Bonus listing and partnerships with other organizations will create great opportunities to share your moto-bike fun and enthusiasm. We will continue to bring riders together at a common place and time. If you have ideas, please raise your hand.

Behind the scenes (techy stuff we've invested in):

  • Improved bonus submission flow and architecture including new Exchange servers.
  • Improved architecture to comment and share submissions on the website. We anticipate this will help riders better share their fun -and to a certain extent even integrate to personal social media.
  • Improved newsletter email send architecture ...which should help newsletters make it to your inbox.
  • Improvements to the BMR smartphone apps. Justin Long continues to apply his skills and wonderful contributions to BMR and you'll be the recipient of some great enhancements to the apps. And a reminder, the apps can be nice tools, but as always they are not mandatory!, they are optional.
